Empowering small and medium sized charities to scale

The vast majority of charities in the UK (98%) fall into this category, with income of less than £5m per annum. These charities play a vital role in our society. They are often ‘first responders’ to newly emerging needs at a local level, have a deep understanding of their communities, remain consistently agile, with quick decision-making processes based on flat and responsive organisational structures, and have greater involvement of people with lived experience.

Despite their number, smaller charities yield only 25% of sector revenue. They often struggle to make ends meet and the idea of scaling their activities often remains nothing more than a pipe dream.

We need a new approach to empower small and medium sized charities to scale, and ensure they are able to sustainably carry out their vital work.

Our approach:

Based on the principles of venture and multiplication philanthropy, which focus primarily on securing philanthropic investment into the charity’s infrastructure, rather than a specific project, we carry out the following in support of our charity clients:

1.  Campaign development

We explore with our charity clients what transformative change would look like, both in terms of a programmatic vision and the internal infrastructure required to achieve these goals. Working backwards, we then develop a suitable campaign proposition and identity, capable of catching the eye and investment of modern philanthropists and other potential funders.

2.  Campaign preparedness

Once the direction of travel is clear, we assist our clients by developing the collateral needed for the above, including a template ‘case for support’, and a campaign slide deck which can be used to engage key stakeholders, including trustees, donors and prospects. We also advise and support charities on the framework they need to effectively cultivate and steward ‘senior volunteers’, (U)HNWI individuals who have been successful in their professional and personal lives. Their investment, advice and networks are key components of any successful major fundraising campaign.

3.  Senior Volunteer recruitment

Finally, we help charities navigate the options for the sourcing and selection of the senior volunteers. These individuals can be hard to find and it’s important that the fit is correct for them and for the charity. Through our in-depth knowledge of the sector, we work to ensure that the best prospects are identified and engaged in the most cost-effective manner.
